i've got two ten inch "free air" subs.  they were suggested to be installed into the rear seat or rear shelf or a car.  i guess that's what they mean by "free air".  so there isn't a box, just a surface to mount in so the front and back waves have their own respective airspace.  right now they're in boxes with huge ports in the backs. (so the back of the box almost isn't there.  they sound ok this way but i can hear some phasing going on when the bass gets real heavy.

what i'm thinking is i'll put two ten inch holes in the rear shelf of my hatchback and mount them there.  this'll give them much larger and separate arispaces.  so what do y'all think?  will this work?  am i waisting my time?

I like the idea of the rear cargo shelf location...

But I know nothing of subs or any kind of audio equipment so I really don't know if it's a good practical idea.

the model number is

TS-W25F  pioneer

they're quite old, i had them from when i had my old car.

oh, and about putting free air in quotes; i did that cause i'm not sure if that's a common thing cause i'd never heard of it before.  most of the time subs are in boxes, and i'd look into a bandpass box or something to fix the phasing problem but i think that won't work cause of this freeair business.  are they making it up?  will these work the same as any other sub in a box?

plus i liked the idea of mounting them in the shelf for the style and to save space in the trunk

oh jeeze, i listen to all kinds of music, seriously.

i think i should stick with the two tens, but... let me guess: your box desinging program didn't recognize the model number?  they're pretty old.

so you're recomending against the cargo shelf mount?...  *sigh* yeah, it was too cool to work, i guess...

ooo, impressive.  as for music, i like rock, hip-hop, lots of folk-ie country sorta stuff, jazz.  i don't like regge very much... except for sting.  sting is good.

i think i'm crafty enough to make a box.. but i might be too lazy.  and i'll have to make sure i could get a new cargo shelf for not too much money before i try a crazy thing like this.

so i'm curious about what your program says about these.  do they really want more airspace than standard subs?

Not really more air apace its more of an infinite baffle .....like a Gigatic boc and there power handling is much weaker due to the "Free air' label so if you do the back shelf design id reccomend reinforcing it with fiberglass resin.

but 2 cubic feet sealed would really be impressive.

hmmm..  as i understand it; sealed boxes have about half the output of ported or bandpass.

maybe i should just suck it up and get rid of these things.  dropp a little cash on a loaded badpass box.

(edit)

thinking about this infinite baffel/sealed box stuff. i just fliped the boxes over onto their backs.  i wish i had a picture to explain this but, the ports are on the back so they get sealed up when the boxes lay on that side.  and... the phasing problem is so gone.  super clean right down 20hz.  or at least 28 or so were i can start to hear it.  i never tested it with a computer or anything, but i think before i was loosing pretty much everything under ~40hz. and i have a pretty accurate ear.

i'm pleased.  thanks so much. i guess i'd thought about this free air business so much i was missing the forest for the trees
