Not sure if this is just the case on the SVT Focus or not, but if you push and hold the tripometer button push in clutch and start car, you get these funky diagnostics tests. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? I did it the other day, and I know what some of them show, but not most.

I sat there scratching my head for a min. :caution

Ya. waht Joe said.

It basicly gives you a digital reading of all the guages and it also gives some helpful diag codes and such.

It does a guage sweep to make sure all the neadles are working.
Digital RMP reading
Digital MPH
Digital KPH
Bulb test

those are the most usefull to non Ford Techs.

Full rundown of the things it can show you. I think some were different, or maybe just the order of them, on my Duratec. But I only tried it once and didn't have the list in front of me so who knows.

Oh ya, this is a fun one to play with.  I think Dan and I will play with this on our trip. :o)

I've not done this with my Duratec yet.

Hm, I'm gonna have to check that out... would be nice to have a digital RPM readout so I can know where I'm shifting at :D

EDIT: the Diagnostic mode DOES work for the 2005 focus, now I just gotta test out the Tach setting :D

EDIT #2: Well, my car now has a pseudo-tach now.  I'm still trying to figure out what everything else means though.

Well, considering my ZX3 is base of the base model (2005 S Model), I have no tach.  Using this test mode dealie, I can now convert my odometer to the all-mighty elusive tach! :D

I don't use it all that often, mainly because I like to monitor how many miles I go on each tank of gas (in the process of getting into test mode, you end up resetting the trip-thingy).  I do know that I manage to keep my car between 2000 and 4500 RPMs average. :D

oh. that's what you were getting at. hehe. if i'm shifting for speed, i rev it all the way to 6700ish. my govenor is higher then usual focus at between 68-6900. otherwise i usually shift it around 3750 to conserve fuel and will go about 380 miles a tank if i drive the whole thing that way. only about 320 if i drive it fast. idles around 700 if i remember right.

I only get like 200-220 a tank, and that is pushing it. Doesn't help with the gas prices as high as they are.

I'll see 280-300 on my car per full tank.  Equates to about 26.5 mpg average.  87 octane.

I'm gonna have to tach up on a future tank and see where 3750 falls on my spedo, maybe I'll try shifting up at 3750 and see if that nets me any better results.

wow. chelly. that's insane. is it the same size tank as me? i think it's like 12.7gallons on my zetec. lol.

My worst tank is generally 280ish if i'm not driving right and occasional AC. Best i've ever done was 393 but i litterally coasted into the gas station with the engine having turned itself off when i turned the wheel to pull in. haha! talk about good luck!

Good thing to remember is that the low fuel light comes on with almost 3 gallons left in the tank, so if you can accurately compute ur millage to say 25mpg then u can feel it's safe to go another 60 and not worry. So that's what i do. Once a month or so i'll do the math and make sure i'm still getting good milleage and helps me figure out how far i can push that needle to the 'E'. haha.

 HOW??

I think the absolute most I saw was 330 out of one tank, and that was mainly highway driving.
