Have the dealer run the vin for you and double check.

What does your engine look like underneath:

THIS:

If yes, it's a PZEV

Roch if you got your 04 new from a NH dealer and it has a little round PZEV window sticker, you gots yourself a Duratec my friend!

All PZEVs are Duratecs, just with some fancy schmancy emissions equipment tacked on. It's not a engine family, it's just a qualification.

Correct lil'D - There are 2 cats on my car along with other little goodies to make it more earth friendly.

The PZEV even with all of its restrictions has impressed me to no end! I'm thrilled with it.  So, Rochman...whish one is it?

ok so apparently i'm a PZEV duratec.

i always thought it was a z-tec but apparently i was wrong.

i offer an explaination: i whent to the dealer and looked the lot over.  all they had there were z-tecs.  i told the guy i wanted one but he didn't have the yellow i wanted on the lot so they got it from another dealer.  so i never acctually saw the window sticker on mine 'till i'd already bought it.

i just found my window sticker in the glove box.  apparently it's a 2.3L PZEV duratec.  the confusing part is that at the top under vehicle description it says 2004 ZX3 2.3L DOHC.  and at the bottom under fuel economy info it says 2004 focus sedan 2.3L PZEV engine.

well i know it's a ZX3.  was this engine designed for the sedans or something?

(all this time i think i'm drivin a 2.0 z-tec...  how long do i have to own a vehicle before i check the window sticker?  apparently like a year and a half...)

Haha, oh well... surprise!!!! Learn something new everyday!

Oh and my window sticker has the same thing (ZX3/sedan). Your car is the ZX3, the exact model EPA ran their mileage figures on was the same engine but in a Focus sedan.

yea that's what i figured.  i'll bet that makes their milage calculations innacurate...  i think my car is lighter than the sedan...  i should do some math sometime...  if i care

The 2.3L came in ZX3's in 03 and 04 and in sedans in 04.

I have done a dit of research on the weights of teh differant models and the sedan is actually the lightest follower by the zx3, zx5, SVT and wagon.

The only way to get the 2.3L in the sedan was to get the loaded ZTS model so you ZX3 might be the same weight or slightly over or under that of the sedan depending on the options you have on the car. The EPA ratings are probably close and you probably wouldn't see much of a differance.

And the 2.3L is a great base platform for a build or leave it alone and it's still a great motor. Last night Chelly was able to keep up with a 3.0L V6 BMW X5 fram a take off at a light. THe X5 got ahead at the end but it was only because Chelly had the AC on and it bogged the car down a bit. We really wanted to ask the lady driving the X5 "how does it feel to have a 15 thousand dollar car keep up with your 50 thousand dollar car"....;hysterical

exactly.  i've outrun mitsubishi eclipse on several occations.  and many trucks.  something about these guys in the big V8 trucks that are geared for towing, what makes them think they should race a little car like this?

and another thing.  ever since i put aftermarket lights on it, every kid in a civic wants a piece of me.  one of them even looked pretty done up, but i guess it was just an exaust, cause he wasn't too fast.

there's somebody drivin a dodge caravan sport who's tried racing me out of the dover toll twice now.  i didn't realize what he was doing 'till i was in fourth gear, at around 40mph.  i didn't even have to shift down for that one.

You know whats funny, with my maxima, which had the ricey hyperwhite exterior all around and nice "V8-like" exhaust note, everybody and their brother would race me.  I have beaten numerous idiots all around Boston, Framingham, etc., both traffic weaving and straight dragging.  Up on the dragstrip, I have held my own against some pretty decent cars as well.  Leaving school at night, not even out of the city just yet and I get some kid in a civic revving on me.  I guess it was no wonder why sometimes I would make it to Natick in about 15 minutes (normally a 30 minute commute from Boston).

But now with the Focus, there's no threat of challenge.  I can drive normally again.  I don't speed all that much.  I rarely do some sort of risky maneuver is someone in front of me is pissing me off.

Eh, its probably best, I would rather keep a reliable daily driver than a street racer machine.  Plus, I'm not a fan of street racing anymore, all it does is put innocent people at stake.  So much you learn from switching cars :D

Funny that you guys mention some of those things. The other day an F250(probably 00-03) tryed to challenge Chelly on 293 near the Mall of NH. It was an easy shit down and I even shut him down to stay behind her. As for the minivan in dover. I think he tried to take Alex(PZEVinside) once also.

Liek you I have no clue why trucks and minivans think they can keep up with cars. Some sure, not a problem. I've taken a few cars a lights with my 83 F250 with 351 carborated 4 speed manual. I've taken a few with my parents V8 Explorer whan they had it. But you gotta be careful and very picky, like a early 90's camery with SOHC 4 cil...

so as a general rule is the PZEV faster then the Zetec. I have the Zetec so I wanna know =). My mom's 05 that she got rid of was a PZEV and it felt pretty similar for the most part when I drove it. More torque i think tho.

The duratec is more powerfull out of the box than a Zetec.

As for your mom's 05 she had a 2.0L duratec which has 5hp more than the Zetec so that is why it felt the same.

One big thing with the duratec is that it is about 200lbs lighter than the Zetec because it is an aluminum block compares to the steel block of the Zetec and responds better to bolt on mods than the Zetec.

My PZEV is definetely faster off the block from my Zetec. They all govern out at about the same speed though.

Did you actually have the VIN run?

Also, dare I ask, how much did you pay for your PZEV & how many miles on it when you did?

i didn't have the vin run, i found the window sticker in the glove box.

i got it back in may of 04 for $11,500. that's after a $3,000 discount for beeing a recent college graduate, and i think i got another smaller disscount for something else i can't remember.  it had, uhh...  40 or so miles on it.  (i can't remember exactly)

Good price! I was just asking to be certain you didn't pay extra for the PZEV. I lucked out in a similar way...The dealer I got mine from advertized it as a Zetec, not knowing what it really was.  My bonus I guess.
