HOW TO REMOVE/INSTALL THE WINDAGE TRAY AND OIL PICKUP
TOOLS NEEDED:
10mm socket
6” socket extension
small torx bit (30?)
REMOVAL:
After removing the oil pan ,(insert link) use the torx socket to remove the two screws that hold the oil pickup to the pump. On some models there is a plastic pickup that also has a mounting bracket securing it to the tray. If equiped, remove the mounting bolt. (8mm)
Use the 10mm socket to remove the bolts holding the windage tray to the block. The Bolts are on the outside of the tray.
Carefully separate the tray from the block. If it is stuck DO NOT pry it apart. There is a gasket that is copper on the long ends but a rubber seal at the sides. Be carefull not to damage this.
INSTALLATION:
Carefully place the windage tray onto the block, making sure that the rubber parts of the gasket seat fully into the seal carriers. Tighten bolts to spec.
Reinstall the torx bolts to the oil pickup and mounting bracket (if equipped). Tighten to spec (8ft/lbs)
I take it that this cant be done on the car then? I had a set of crank scrapers I was going to install and discovered that it appeared you had to drop the lower half of the motor to get to the crank itself. I didnt, at the time anyway, see anyway to drop the tray without lowering the bottom half of the motor. Not to mention all the exterior stuff that is connected to it or bolted to it.

It whines a lot, but I like it
The only way I would do this "in car" is if I had the engine supported on a bar or hoist and then had a jack under the trans. Take out the engine to trans bolts on the bottom half and it should just drop right down after removing the perimeter windage tray bolts. Since the engine and trans are in teh mounts and the windage tray dosent really support any weight. (just keeps the trans and engine mounted evenly for the sake of the input shaft.) then it should be ok to unbolt the lower half of the transmission.
Good info TXFO. Guess I'll have to wait until I can get a motor to build up. Installing some crank scrapers, as much as I would like to, isnt worth all the trouble at the moment.

i've done it a couple times in the car, it's not as bad as you'd think. unbolt the ps and stuff off the front but leave it there, then unbolt the passenger side axle support from the back of the block. then just drop the pan, take off the pickup tube and undo the 30 or so bolts that hold the upper pan to the block and to the trans. i had to swap out a few pistons this way in the car, the engine and trans are still fully supported by the motor mounts, completely safe. Not a lot of fun, but neither is dropping the k-member and motor/trans. fun stuff, i think we always try to do stuff the hardest way possible. haha
edit: oh yeah, always ALWAYS replace the gasket between the upper oil pan and the block. it's like 20 bones, well worth it when u take it all apart and then back together then it leaks.
