All of this information is from the http://www.focushacks.com database. I am passing it along to you because this was really annoying! Also note the following instructions seem silly but it is correct:

The Belt Minder is the electronic warning system to remind you to use your safety belt system. It's a combination of a sounding chime and the illuminating warning light on your instrument panel. By default, the Belt Minder is active. When active, if the driver's safety belt is not buckled in about 5 seconds from the time the warning light has turned off, the warning light will again illuminate and the alarm chime will sound for 6 seconds, repeating itself every 30 seconds for the next 5 minutes, or until you buckle your seat belt. This is how to completely deactivate the Belt Minder so that it never reminds you again, or at least until your reactivate it...

Before starting, make sure that:

  • The partking brake is set.
  • The car is in Park(automatic), Neutral(manual).
  • The ignition is OFF.
  • All doors are closed.
  • The driver's safety belt is un-buckled.
  • The parking and headlights are OFF.

    How to deactivate it:

    1) Turn the ignition switch to ON, but DO NOT START.
    2) Wait for the safety belt warning light to go OFF(1-2 minutes).
Steps 3-5 MUST be completed within 60 seconds!
    3) Buckle, then un-buckle the driver's safety belt 3 times, ending with the belt un-buckled.
    4) Turn on the headlights, turn off the headlights.
    **
    5) Buckle, then un-buckle the driver's safety belt 3 times, ending with the belt un-buckled.
After step 5, the Safety Belt Warning Light will be turned on for 3 seconds.
    6) Within 7 seconds of the safety belt warning light turning OFF, buckle then un-buckle the safety belt. This will disable the Belt Minder if it is currently enabled, or enable the Belt Minder if it is currently disabled.

** KEEP THE HEADLIGHS ON FOR ATLEAST A WHOLE SECOND (A Mistake I Made:P)

Confirmation of the disabling of the Belt Minder is provided by flashing the safety belt warning light 4 times per seconds for 3 seconds. Confirmation of the enabling of the Belt Minder is provided by flashing the safety belt warning light 4 times per seconds for 3 seconds, followed by 3 seconds with the safety belt light off, then followed by flashing the safety belt light 4 times per second for 3 seconds again. After confirmation, the deactivation/activation of the Belt Minder procedure is complete.

If this information is on this webboard already; I apologise. I don't get to read every post. Also this doesn't stop the chime when you start your car if your sealtbelt is not on but it stops it from beepin' after that! Headache saving information if you ask me!:D

Pokes, before I disabled mine, it went for like 30 seconds.. longest 30 seconds of my life let me tell ya, wanted to rip my hair out!

And it may be in the manual, but I never thought to look for it there, Chris was the one who told me there was a way to disable it. I lived with that beep for over a year with my first focus.. grrrr...

OK, I don't want to sound like father time or a safety nazi, but why would you want to disable it? Don't you wear your seatbelt? Or maybe you just don't believe all those stats?

I've found that it's nice to have it off for times you may be in the car while it's on, but you're not driving, i.e. you're working on the car and need to have it on for some reason, or when you've started the car and are letting it warm up or cool down inside before you get going - no need for a seatbelt till you're actually driving.

It's not that we don't wear our seatbelts it's just we live in places where we need the A/C on while we are waiting for someone (or the drive-ins when its hot:P) and are not going to need the belt on. I have also had to work on the car when its on and that gets really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, annoying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was actually unaware that the seatbelt reminder worked without the car being in motion.

Me too. I guess I just got in the habit of buckling up before I start the car years ago.

It is a 2000... most of the pages in my owners manual are stuck together... I will check with a budy of mine, he has the same car.

And 5 min later.... Never mind. I did it again and it worked... Thanks!!
