The dust is an abrasive & may have scratched the message into the clear coat. I'd try waxing it with a mild abrasive, (cleaning) wax. Instead of applying the wax in a circular motion, try rubbing in straight lines. If that doesn't work, there are several products on the market that claim to get rid of scratches. They're usually liquid. I've used one that comes in a bright yellow bottle. There's 4" of snow on the ground & I'm too lazy to go out to the garage & look for the brand name. I've had mixed results with it.

If still unsuccessful, try some polishing compound. This is different from rubbing compound, in that it has less "cut" or abrasive. I'd take about a shot glass full (it's a soft paste), and mix it with maybe 3-4 shot glasses of water. Mix it thoroughly. It should be a runny liquid. Try it 1st on a small, inconspicuous area of the car. If OK, rub it on using straight motions running from front to back on the hood. Be careful. Less is more. Despite the dilution, it's possible to rub right through the clear coat, if you get over zealous. Patience is the key. Do a little, wipe it off & check it. Unfortunately, black is the most difficult color to work with, because it shows everything. In fact, if the car was yellow or white, I doubt if you'd even have noticed the "message."

Clay Bar... that will get out most little scraches that would have left the message on the hood. Its easy and something that makes the car stupid shiney when ya do it. Im sure you have seen the messages about it on here... we all love it :)  Great results

I dont blame him for being pissed... I would be too!!
