Warning: Rant, Language, Opinion.

Actually, Sherri and I have pretty much decided on moving to Milwaukee,
my original hometown, sometime in the next couple months. We're tired
of this hell hole. Tired of nothing to do, tired of nowhere to go,
tired of noone to see... tired of the shit-ass people here who think
that because they get $450 in food stamps every month that they're
better than anyone else. Have another kid, let me pay for that one too!
Sons of bitches. I wish I had $1 for every family here that's ABUSING
the welfare system. I don't mind people who use it for a helping hand.
What irks me is people who use it as a way of life. Which, around here
is the norm. And since the SOB's don't work, all they do is get in
other people's business.

Working at a gas station / restaurant, I see it all. All these mofo's
come in here, get $10 worth of Pepsi and chips on their food stamp card
(sometimes more) then want a fucking lottery ticket or cigarettes! When
I get ready to blow this town, I'm going to refuse the sale, for moral
reasons, which is perfectly legal. So HA to all you mofo's who want to
get free food and then want to get cigs/lottery. Shove it. One or the
other. If you can't afford to buy food, you can't buy cigs or lotto
either.

Here's the kicker- our next-door neighbor is trying to get MORE child
support because the $250/mo she gets isn't enough to support her and
the baby. Yeah, you heard me right- HER AND the baby. It's supposed to
pay for the fucking kid, not you! You're still responsible for your own
half of the child, and you're still responsible for yourself. She
hasn't had a job in months. She's been living off that $$ (and her
parents $$).
:fu:fuBeattyville and all the Beattyvillians!

Project.... You see this everywhere. Not just in the Blue Grass State.

I've seen folks cashing in food stamps at the local Kash & Karry and drive away in New SUVs and Caddies. Sheesh...

Bama, Let's get get back to the pulling and touching conversation.

When I lived in Milwaukee, I didn't see it. Noone where I lived used food stamps. Everyone worked hard for what they had, and if they didn't have enough, they worked harder.

Here is a PRIME example of the kind of BS I'm talking about. This woman came in last night at ~10pm. Here is what she bought (I was so pissed I made a copy of the reciept):

Bag of Ice
XXL Ruffles SC/Chedd
Box frosted donuts
half gallon strawberry icecream
BBQ potato chips
Nac Chz Doritos
Giant beef stick
Bac Chedd TGIF chips
Lg bag beef jerky
Gatorade strwbry
SoBe Liz Lava
Mt. Dew 20oz
Berry skittles
Mt Dew 12pk can
Pepsi 12pk can
4x Resses PB big cup
Skittles gum
Hershey's cookies + cream
5th ave bar

Total: $44.30... and she STILL had $451.38 left on her friggin card!

Then, of course, the kicker:
PK Newports soft pack
PK Marlboro Red SP
PK KY Best FF SP

Total: $8.29

So if for every $44 she spent on her card, she spends $8 on cigs, she approximately spends $91/mo on cigs. So IMO, she should get $91/mo LESS on her FS card until she learns that I'm not gonna pay for her way of life. OHHH I can't wait for the last day I work at that gas station! People are gonna hate me, but they can kiss my hairy white ass.

It used to be you couldn't buy junk on stamps.

Shame it's not that way anymore!

I used to see it all the time too.  I worked for a Supermarket for 4 years and it would send me when I'd see the idiots with sick kids, holes in thier clothes and buying beer, cigs and other crap.

kill 'em an' eat 'em

I was told the reason the rules changed and people can get junk food is because the people getting stamps were complaining it's not fair they couldn't buy certain things cash patrons could. NO SHIT!? Get over it! I'm paying for you and your kids... so you should only get to buy what you NEED to.

Around here, theres two big scams, too. People buy 10 cases of soda on their card @ $5 each, and then sell them for $2 each and keep the cash (usually for drugs/ alcohol). Also, there's a beverage here called "Ale-8-1" which has returnable bottles (30 cents a bottle). I've heard of people buying it, dumping it out and returning the bottles just so they can get cash. I feel that you shouldn't be able to buy items that require a deposit, or you should have to pay the deposit in cash, to stop this kind of fraud.

Anywhere, anytime, under any system or rules, there are people who will find a way to cheat, and/or push the limits. IMO, there's really nothing that can be done about this. If you make the qualifiers too strict, then people who have legitimate needs won't be able to meet them.

The feeling you have is, I believe, a common one. I'm working. I'm paying for these people through my taxes. They should do what what I think they should do with the money. And yes, thousands of examples of misuse can be cited. People will always find a way.

In order to save my sanity, I don't let this rent a lot of free space in my head. To me, it's like tilting at windmills. The problem can and will never be completely eliminated.

It's a quote from Don Quixote de La Mancha, (Sometimes known as Man of LaMancha) by Miguel de Cervantes. It's a comedy/tragedy where Don Quixote is sort of a bumbling fool. He sometimes sees windmills as dragons, and charges at them on his horse with his sword drawn to attack them. This was known as "tilting" at that time (medieval). The line "stuck" to mean a futile or foolhardy exercise.
