Motorcyclist charged with 205 mph pleads guilty

December 24, 2004 TILLEY1224

A 20-year-old Stillwater motorcyclist charged with going 205 miles per hour down Hwy. 61 in September pleaded guilty on Wednesday in Wabasha County District Court to speeding and was sentenced to 200 hours of community service.

Judge Terrence Walters placed Samuel Tilley on probation for a year and ordered him to pay $125 in court and probation fees, said the Wabasha County attorney's office. He will not serve any jail time.

He also admitted not having a proper motorcycle license. Under a plea agreement, a reckless-driving charge was dropped.

The agreement states that Tilley was going 205 mph in a 65 mph zone 12 miles south of Wabasha. He was clocked by a State Patrol pilot on Sept. 18 during the Flood Run, a motorcycle charity event.

The pilot radioed from his plane to a State Patrol officer in a squad car who arrested and ticketed Tilley.

it's also impossible, the bike doesn't have the aerodynamics to be able to go 205mph. It's been proven over and over again by some motorcycle people. The bike would not be capable in doing this speed. Funny part is the kid is a son or nephew or some significant relative to the sheriff I think it was.

no wonder why he didn't get no jail time, and only had to pay only $125 in probation and court fees...

regardless of how modified... Unless it was a drag bike, he didn't hit 205mph. From AMA Prostar records, he'd have tied the ProMod speed record, and I'm guessing no matter how much work he had done, it wasn't a ProMod bike he was driving.

As a long-time motorcyclist, I find 205 mph to pretty dubious as well. When they do bike tests, e.g. 1/4 mi or top speed, they use a pro rider, who weighs about 110 lbs. Unless he had a world class 500cc GP bike, I doubt he actually reached that speed, unless he was dropped out of an airplane.:stup

Yeah, the 205 is bogus for a number of reasons, but by pleaing guilty to it he gets himself into the 200 mph club pretty cheap.

Sorry RPIJG,
It's not impossible.
Doesn't say what he was riding.
Busa out of the box is good for 180+.
Scott Guthrie did 251 on a busa last summer.

but I can't find out what the class specification is for his bike. MPSBF1650 I'd like to know what class that equilevates to in AMA class.

MPS is modified partial streamlining. Which means that the aero's have been modified to allow for such speeds.

I welcome people bringing this up, but it would just seem to me that at those speeds aerodynamics would catch up sooner or later, I just can't see how they can do 200+ without the help of aerodynamic modifications.

I agree they can hit 200+, but it takes a special bike to do that. After riding for 35+ years, I know how fast bikes can be. I also know the amount of bull$hit re: speed & times is at least as bad as with cars. I can't tell you how many guys I've heard claim their 1989 Ninja 750 was clocked at 150 mph. Uh huh. What I'm saying is, unless this guy had a bonified race bike, or something that was significantly modified, he was unlikely to reach that speed. And just because the Magazine tests show that a bike went X mph, doesn't help me believe it. If you read the tests, they throw in BS like "corrected time", which is calculated from actual time, based on 0 altitude, perfect temp and humidity, 0 wind, etc. What a crock!

How many (be honest here) have ever met or exceeded the times posted in the mags. e.g. Car & Driver, Motor Trend, Cycle World, Sport Bike, etc. on a perfectly stock machine?
