I did start another thread in the Rant section on this because of BSL in Denver.
Bama, so nice to see someone else as passionate about understanding dogs as I am. The problem is exactly that - lack of education!
Dogs cannot understand words, only connotation - you can yell at a dog until you pass out and they still won't know what you're talking about. Training with love is the only way.
I've always known a chained dog is more apt to protect than a 'dog at large' why? - They re limited on their movements. They have bounderies and they are protecting their turf. If you were a stranger and tried to enter my house without permission you may get shot - why not bit? Same thing. I hate to say it, but some lawsuits surrounding dog attacks involve people entering property occupied by a dog without it's owner around. Well, 1st of all, why the heck would you go near someone's home who owns a dog when they aren't there without their permission??? DUH
The population of pitts vs. other breeds - let's think this one through - how many of you breed your cocker spaniels willy nilly just for population and fighting? Not many I'm certain! Pitts are the #1 most abused dog in this country! also the most euthenized. Why? These criminals who fight these dogs are NOT put in jail for abuse and the fines they get aren't even enough to put a dent in the money they'll make the same night fighting another dog.
Drug houses have them because of the size & strength - fairly small & compact - short haired and strong, widely opening jaws to inflict severe wounds.
I don't know - I can keep on going with this whole thing and I did NOT chose my Doberman for protection (My breeder would not let a dog go if someone told her that) I got one because I adore the breed. I will own more dobermans in the future, but MACK, my APBT is a rescue - abused the first year of his life, saved by my brother and attacked by another dog he came to me in need of love and training. I've done that and he's just a big ol' marshmallow, but I'm not dumb - I know the toll the abuse could have caused to him. I am very careful of the circumstances I put him into and how we socialize. I won't bring him to a dog park because I don't know if he would get along with all dogs.
Saturday he spent the whole day hanging out with Pokes' Mini Pin Franklin and they were perfect together. Unfortunately, Tiff's dog Kami - Mack's a little short fused. Why? we don't know. It could be because Kami is very active and likes to stare. Staring is a sign of agreesion in the dog world.
There is just so much to educate this world with when it comes to dogs, but people are just too damned lazy.
FYI - My doberman had been attacked by a Stafforshire Terrier, but I still love the breed. The owner was a b@stard
Don't judge a book by it's cover.

So an Animal Control Oficer just left today with records on a four ear old who was bit in the face by a Shar pei. No adults were around. Only his 8 year old sister. The dog had bitten someone before this too. The parents want the dog back. Hmmmmm, so who seems to be the problem here. The dog or the owners.
Doesn't seem all that right to me. Let's protect the mugger but not the dog that may have saved this woman's life.
That is what it is all about Bama. REsponsible ownership should be the emphasis, not banning pitbulls.
All a ban really does is take them out of the hands of law abiding citizens. Really.. how many criminals (ie dog fighters) care whether it is legal or not.

It's the owners and breeders.
I'm just wondering if the dog in Denver came out of the California breeder that has been and as far as I know still is breeding purely for aggression. I believe that the same breeder's dogs have killed the one woman in San Francisco as well as a child in Oregon.
I don't think that there's a prayer for the breed long term. There was a bust at the Canadian border a few months ago of someone bringing in dogs from New Jersey to fight in Toronto. Unless there are some standards set for dog breeders, of any breed, and they are enforced, the cities will take the one response that they can as evidenced by the recent actions. It's tragic but I just don't see a sensible resolution coming along.
I've had dogs all my life until recently. Putting the last one down just tore my heart out and I just don't want to go through that again.

Codger, so responsible owners shouldn't be allowed to own pitbulls because there are absolute idiots fighting them?
And just for the record, I will *NEVER* EVER* support a breeder in my life. There are too many dogs in shelters to even THINK about spending hundreds of dollars for a freakin piece of paper that says they are UKC/AKC whatever registered. I prefer to help the ones in need instead.

That's not what I said. The problem is owners and breeders. Owners that either don't give a damn and mistreat the dogs and breeders that are either nutcases or slimeballs. The responsible owners and breeders are all paying the price for the above referred to dickheads. And at the end of the day many of the dogs are getting put down for no good reason. Most of my dogs have been rescues as well. But it doesn't matter where you got your dog from. The breed is being painted with a broad brush. You could have gotten a Dobie from God himself but the perception is that the Dobie is a nasty animal. Until the breeders are held to a standard and the owners are held responsible for the behaviour of their dogs this whole situation will just get worse. The lowlifes running puppy mills and the psychopaths breeding overly aggressive dogs are completely unregulated. I referred to the dogs from new jersey because they came from a kennel that was known to the authorities but there was no regulation that they could touch the breeder with.

You didn't specify, you just said it is the owners and the breeders. I am an owner so technicaly you could have been talking about me
and my "just for the record" had really nothing to do with your post
