Agreed. I was bummed as well. Technically, she was considered a Conservative I think. However, she was no neo-con, and I think she was very smart and conscientious in her decisions.
I really thought Sandra, of all the Justices, would wait it out 3 years until the Shrub wasn't in control of who goes in. But she was often in the minority opinion AFAIK, and was a tie-breaker a lot, I'm sure that gets tiring.
Bush better not try appointing someone ridiculous, oh wait, like Bolton to the UN?! Luckily, I think Dems have enough power to filibuster any horrendous candidiates to death, so MAYBE Bush will understand this and choose someone more focused on the best interests of the American justice system and its laws, not his own narrow-minded idealistic agenda... haha, we're nothing without our dreams right?!
I heard, didn't get to see it, that during Bush's press conference he smirked after saying he'll take this responsibility very seriously. I don't know if that's true, or if he was just being his strange self, but I hope that's no confirmation of what I fear...
Justice O'Connor was an admirable person and will be hard to replace, who woulda thought she'd retire first of the ones they've got there?

I thought maybe Renquist (I know I didn't spell that one right-sorry) but never her.
I am just really bummed. She was the a very responsible not afraid to dissent, very admirable person.
I also heard about Bush's smirking. Made me feel even worse

I just saw this related article, it has this interesting paragraph I hadn't heard before:
Democrats, however, said they wouldn't be rushed, considering that O'Connor said in her resignation statement that she would serve until her replacement was confirmed.
As you probably heard, Sandra Day O'Connor just resigned from the Supreme Court. This is an extremely important time for our senators to hear from us. They need to know that we are counting on them to stand up to President Bush and protect our rights -- because with a moderate like O'Connor stepping down and a far-right like Bush making the nomination, well, the stakes couldn't be higher. The Terri Schiavo tragedy showed us all just how far these people are willing to go.
MoveOn PAC has already started an emergency petition, and we're looking to get 250,000 signatures and comments to the Senate before Tuesday -- which is when rumor has it Bush will announce his nomination.
I hope you can take a minute to join me in signing this petition, so our senators know that, in what might be the fight of our lives, we need them to do what it takes to protect our rights.

I was actualy sent this by my brother in law, I don't know anything about previous petitions.
I signed it, as well as my husband and my daughter.

I might have to break with my usual somewhat-peaceful nature and go on an assasination spree... but you didn't hear me say that!
I'll be watching it at 9, that's for sure! I kinda think it's gonna be that Latino man that the Republicans don't want chosen because they fear his stance on abortion will slant left once seated on the Court.
Don't mess with my reproductive rights.. and we'll be a little okay.
Which way do they think he's going to go?
I have to admit I am more than a little nervous right now.

Excellent, a 50 y/o "rock solid conservative"white male! Who used to be a clerk for Rehnquist, and was involved in Bush I and Reagan's administrations... Plus he seems anti-Roe, it's just what we hoped for... YES!
Time to prepare the liberal flamethrowers, they're gonna jump all over this one, I feel...
On a side note, doany of you see abortion ever becoming illegal? Do you think they could overturn Roe v Wade?

I would seriously hope not. But what with the Red-controlled all three branches of the Govt (assuming Sandra's place is filled by someone like this guy)... who knows?! I think it would be very hard, but I won't say impossible. Like the Yahoo article briefly states, there's no strong Constitutional clause upholding Roe v. Wade so they could fight it if they tried hard enough and mounted the proper offense. ('course I'm no Constitution scholar, I'll be the first to admit!)
It'd be ugly though, on so many levels. I personally have no problem with abortion in principle but I know many people do, and that's fine For Them. But if you go and "delegalize" it for all, you're just gonna get an Alcohol Prohibition bootlegging action. Women who can't/don't want to carry a child to term will seek out abortions and will get sick or die because they have to sneak around and not have sterile, safe places to go. It's a terrible idea and I hope America's got enough sense to leave the decision alone.

This could be interesting.
The U.S. could become the world's number one freakshow.
Shouldn't take more than five years before women and any body other than land owning white males are disenfranchised.
Well, Hmmmmm maybe 10 years.
Sorry, I couldn't resist.
Interesting info on Roberts. Yup, looks like he's qualified. http://courtinginfluence.net/nominee.php?nominee_id=55
