I don't know if it'll ever end. Some of these people have been warring against each other since before the time of Christ. IMO the reason the world hasn't seen this until recently, is that strong arm dictators e.g.Hussein just brutalized everybody, and kept them in line.
The whole populace/culture of the area has never known any real freedom. Now that they have (ha ha) a measure of freedom, they simply don't know what to do. Everybody sees an opportunity, and is trying to gain an advantage, using the means they've almost always resorted to - violence.
And everyone resents the U.S.A presence there. Have we made things better? Are the Iraqi's making progress? At what point can we let them take over their own country?
That last sentence is ludicrous! It IS their country. We invaded it for what amounts to be no good reason. Now we're talking about when WE can give their country back to them. Hell! WE should have never gone their in the 1st place. The U.S. government just decided to invade a sovereign nation just because "we could." What does that make us?

Sadly, I think that it'll get worse before it gets better. There are so many artificial power imbalances in the region going way back.
Western interference just supports the imbalances and drags out the conflicts. The Rwandan massacres were insignificant when looked at in the context of the Arab countries and what is in store.
Like it or not, I don't believe that there is a damned thing that can be done to avoid the fighting that will intensify between the various factions as their oil resources dry up and the West no longer has any interest in the area.

It's a nightmare and considering the way their society has grown through the generations over the thousands of years the battling has been happening we cannot, as 'superpowers' understand why they don't feel the way we do about life etc.
I'm not saying we have a better 'grasp' on humanity and the value of life, but we, as a whole, don't typically view dying for your beliefs in such a zealotous way. It seems desperately barbaric, and it is, but it's sadly something that is viewed by so many in countries like iraq as the ultimate sacrifice for what you believe. Martordom is highly regarded for those sects who truly believe they are 'right'.
There's a term, who's 'right' in all of this. No one really. They're killing one another, we're killing them, they're killing us and there is not positive to the whole thing no matter how these politicians spin the story.
I've felt more and more saddness, deep, deep sadness about humanity as a whole with all of the violent and selfishness that I've experienced over the past 5-10 years. It's very disheartening.
