This kicks ass... Im glad its about time they did this. I know if i ever had to evacuate and could not take the dog, my ass would stay home and probably cause more problems then if i could have just brought him with me!
Legislation Would Require Pet Evacuation Planning

WASHINGTON -- The House has passed legislation that requires pets to be considered in future emergency preparedness plans.

The measure mandates state and local preparedness offices to take into account pet owners, household pets and service animals when drawing up evacuation plans. Offices that fail to do so would not qualify for grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The sponsor of the bill is California Democrat Tom Lantos, who was moved by TV footage of a little boy losing his dog during Hurricane Katrina rescue operations.

The bill was passed 349-24

Similar legislation has also been introduced in the Senate.

puppy kickers, now that's funny...not really, but I like the term.

I think this is excellent.  the animals were turned out into the streets to starve and fend for themselves when ppl. took shelter.  these animals then went out and ended up eating carcases of animals and humans as well as becoming a menace.

I cannot imagine having to chose between having a roof over my head and giving up a beloved pet, even though I am a realist about it.  I'd have  a lean-to and my dog curled up right next to me.
