These "alert levels", e.g. yellow, red, orange, etc...what are they for? Let's say the level just jumped up a couple of places. What am I gonna do about it? What can I do? That's right...nothing. All these color levels are doing is adding to the fear. It's an example of our own govt. inducing panic. Then when/if nothing happens, they say, "See, look how effective our anti-terrorist actions are."
If there's a threat, tell the people who can do something about it, like the armed forces, police, fire, etc. Telling me does nothing except sell newspapers.

yup, I don't pay any attention to the elevated crap anymore...it's tahdid...we've been at some form of elevated since 9/11. It follows the theory, put a frog in boiling water and he'll jump out immediately, put a frog in cool water and slowly raise the temperature and he'll boil to death.
Another factor for this is a study I read about yesterday on CNN. When people are afraid (ie when the threat level is elevated) more people approve of Bush because he plays to that idea of fear. That you are in danger and that he is going to save you. I'm not making this up either, this was an actual study. When people are afraid they approve of Bush not based on actual policies but on fear for death alone. Why do you think the Bush admin plays up this threat so much?
Well, With all of the bombardment we have on this whole thing since 9/11 I'm trying not to go numb.
I am that person who will report something "out of the norm" and if something just doesn't seem to be right to me I'll be very leary of it. I wanted to go into the military and I wanted to be a cop, but due to my health and kidney transplants I can't be what I'd like to be.
I'm typically very observant, but not an alarmist. I like to think under adverse situations I keep a fairly level head. I've had my father cut off the end of his thumb when I was younger. I've worked in an Operating room (including emergency OR). I've been there for people when they have had gran mal seizures and diabetic shock etc. Each time, I kick into a mode where my logic takes over.
These elevated colors can panic many, but they also paint a small picture that we're not ok - we're not alone and you don't really know your "neighbor" as much as you might think.
I'm not paranoid, just cautious - I like to think there are others like me out there willing to step up if needed - even if the gov't doesn't want me, I like to be able to move around freely.
I'm not going to invite a catastrophe, but I won't let even the smallest disagreement continue if I can calm it or diffuse it.
People need to give more of a damn about others. Simple as that.
I remember just after 9/11 people were so helpful, caring, considerate and willing to be cordial to me face to face and even on the roads! After a month...right back to the "me first" attitude that has infected society. I, personally, am sick of it. Mind you, screw being PC - that's what's gotten us into more sh*t then I care to deal with. Don't be rude and speak your mind - don't just argue a point for the sake of arguing...if you have a complaint, follow up the complaint with an idea on how to solve the damn problem! I can't stand it when ppl. whine about crap and then don't do anything about it.
I've done a lot, in little ways. I'd like to think all of those little things I do each day for myself, others, the environment etc. will add up to acomplishing something. If not, a feeling inside myself of actually giving a rats ass about my world.
Do I feel safer - not really because I am a realist. I know if someone wants something bad enough they will find a way. But, in having said that - you can reverse that sentiment - If we want our world to be without this hate and destruction - we can make a change if we apply ourselves.
Politics IS a huge reason for delays and rhetoric on the terrist BS. I'm sick of the partisanship causing us to have to suffer.

The original concept to the threat level was actually two fold. First make the public 'aware' of the threat then to put the appropriate authorities and security people on alert.
My concern is that we have been at the elevated level since 9/11. I dont think this has achieved what it should have other than get people used to living at that level. I think they should have left it at no threat until they had solid info to the contrary then raise it to yellow, orange or whatever based on the info. If there is a threat but no specific info as to the target or when, then it should be Yellow. If they have specific targets and dates mentioned then go to Orange, and so on.
They did do something this time around in raising the threat level that should have been in place from the start which is make it area specific. If the threat is for New York, dont put the whole freakin country on alert, what good does that do? They have apparently gotten the message on that since this threat level upgrade was geographically specific.
I think the public needs something to go by like this, I just think they are numbing us keeping it at an elevated level with no threats apparent from an information stand point. The miltary uses the Defense Condition (DEFCON) level to determine readiness, it makes sense with as untargeted as terrorism is (that is, terrorist arent just targeting miltary targets, they are targeting whatever will hinder, cripple or cause fear) that the public have something to judge the possibility of an attack by as well.
Just my two cents worth.

Yeah, I actually agree in a way. Although the levels and colors can seem stupid, I am actually glad that they choose to warn us and actually say something when they feel they have found credible threats.
