Alright, so I went out last night and purchased XM radio for my car. Got a really good deal for the reciever and and modulator, and a mail in form for the home kit too. for only 119.99 plus like 18.86 protection plan for two years.
So my question is this, who has it, likes it, hates it?? I know pitchblackzx3 has it and loves it, he helped persuade me into gettin it. I have to run the antenna tonight, anyone have to do this before? Should be interesting. When I get it all in and what not I will post it up.
Any input appreciated..

I've been trying to get it actually. I got an xm ready receiver a couple months ago but was told that they haven't finished making the stuff I need to get it to work directly from the receiver. I didn't want to get the generic stuff they sell to hook up non ready receivers because they told me that, while it is good, it's not as clear as it can be directly connect right from the receiver. So which way does yours work? Is it directly from the receiver? If so where did you get it from?

Mine doesn't go through my radio at all. And since I moved the antenna from the front dash (wher ethey tell you not to put it but Chris has his there with no problems, wasnt the same for me) to the back rear roof, I LOVE THE SOUND!! The quality is great and I dont live in the city either. There are two cords, well three, one has two wires. The one with two wires plugs into my lighter and the other plug is for my antenna. I have my radio tuned to a specific station and I am completly satisfied with the product. I bought the XM Roady which I got for a great deal of only $119.99 with the lighter plug ( not usually included) and I have a mail in form for a free home kit to use with any radio in my house. I RECOMMEND THIS!!

So it works better on the roof. Thats great!
Mine works fine on my front dash, and since im mostly in the city, it works fine.
And Pokes, glad i could make you smile.......good times
yea I spent a lot of money on a new cd player mainly to have it be combined with XM radio. Of course no one told me that can't be done yet. So I have to wait. Hopefully not to long. I really wanted it set up from my nice new sony

I have a Sony in dash that is XM ready, though i m using the stand alone Delphi SKYfi unit, i can get Sony XM Revier unit and hook it up, so i can use the stereo to function my XM. The units out there to do it with.
here is what support at crutchfeild told me in an email when I asked about adding XM:
I will be happy to help with your question on adding XM to your receiver. You would need to get an XM tuner in addition to the antenna. You have the option of either a direct connection or universal "plug and play" tuner. Since you have an XM-ready receiver, the direct connection method is the better way to go since it has better sound quality and you can hide the tuner out of site. Unfortunately, there is not a direct-connection tuner currently available. This is how things currently stand with XM: XM has decided to start making their own hardware. They plan on releasing a single tuner that will work with any XM-ready receiver through a third party adapter. However, the release date for this tuner and these adapters keeps getting pushed back, and we do not currently have a firm release date. Sorry I did not have better news there.
I would recommend waiting on the direct connection tuner to come out, if you don't mind doing so. Although you can get a universal add-on tuner now, I would not recommend it for two reasons. First, the sound quality will not be as good. Second, the XM subscription is actually linked to the tuner. So if you were to get a universal tuner now and a direct connection unit later, you would actually need to cancel your existing subscription and re-subscribe.
So is this true?

Well i think i know what they mean now. Pioneer and Sony used to make the tuner for XM. They are now discontinued. Now it makes sense why, XM is making their own hardware.
You can still do a "direct connection" though, you just have to find the old tuners! Which i have tried, and they are yup to $200!!
So i guess unless you want a plug and play kit, your gonna have to wait...which kinda sucks!
oh ok, that makes sense to me now. All I know is I love the way mine is set up, I can grab it out of my car if i want or wahtever.. Works great and definatly worth the money..

There is a unit called the XM Commander. This is a universal unit the can connect either direct to an XM ready headunit or by way of FM modulator.
If you conect it to your XM ready headunit,(via rca line out), the headunit will control the XM functions, you use the source button to scroll to XM (ie: FM, AM, CD, XM...) then the seek & search functions work normally.
If you use the FM modulation connection there is a small (~1.5"x3") display screen that can be mounted on the dash, in the headliner, custom molded just about anyplace. its got a few preset buttons on it & a scroll wheel. There is a remote control also.
My parents both have it installed in their cars, and they absolutly love it. They both bought the Commander unit which is real small, but the display is big and easy to read. The variety of stations is well worth the monthly cost, plus it's always the same, no matter where you are.
BTW-I'm not positive on this, but why wouldn't it work outside the U.S.? If I remember correctly, when you register, it asks you your country? Since it's satielitte, I would think that it would work anywhere.
Also, when you leave the radio on to let it download, make sure to turn off all the other accesories in the car...don't ask me how I know
