I can tell you from personal experience that the first one there is AWESOME! I had it in my car for about a month. The only reason i got rid of it is that it had a bad channel on it causing my front pass speaker to pop and not work. Due to the fact they are discontinuing the model and I bought it at best buy, they didnt have any others and I got a different one.
I havent heard much about the second one, but I love pioneer and im sure you would be happy with whichever model you choose.

I do have the diming lights when the bass kicks in... i also have a horrid alternator whine whenever i have the stereo is on.... its not very pleasent when you are accelerating as the pitch gets higher the higher your RPMS are.... i dont like that too much... thought maybe the cap would help out a little.

A cap won't help with the altenator whine.
Either, your RCA's & power wires are too close together or your ground point for the amps is not good enough.
1) re run the RCA's away from (as best you can) the power wire.
2) Be sure you have ONE ground point for BOTH amps, preferably away from a factory ground. (I removed the car seat anchor on the driver side & used one of those holes.) Be sure to scrape that ground point to bare metal.
3) oddly enough I can make the bigger ground wires for you. a mear $30.00 for three ground wires & one power wire.
the three grounds attach as follows:
Battery to chassis
Chassis to block
Block to chassis
The power wire attaches
battery to altenator
These are all factory points, no drilling required.
The wires cut to length & are 4 gauge with ring terminals at each end.
Pokes, Audiojunkie is going to be helping me re run my amp wire and takin a look at my fog light disaster at the g2g next weekend, you might ask him if he would be so kind

caps dont help with lights dimming...and they CAN get rid of alternator whine...they keep the voltage going to the amp less rippled.....and your ground may be too long on the amp.....but basically ground the headunit where the amps are grounded this will give the signal to the amp the same ground potential as the signal source.

I have always thought that my amp ground was too long... I think thats how i burnt out the 1st one i had (damn it for not having an internal fuse!!)
OK... so here is what im gonna do
1. Pick a HU (if anyone can help me)
2. Get that groundwire hit and get it in (if anyone can help me)
3. Get a cap to try to even things out (If anyone can help me)
4. Check Grounds
5. RE-run wires
Goodness... im gonna be a busy bunny... if anyone can help me

I have about $300 i want ot invest at most in the HU.
I definatly have a thing for Pioneer's though. Im most interested in something with a kickass tuner so that i can get some radio in the car with the shorty and something with some clear, crisp sound so that i can enjoy what i have. dont need too much there, just LOVE my clarity Also need it to be satilite radio ready incase i ever decide to go that way in the future (Im really not too picky )

As you know pokes, I have a pioneer, and I have ONLY ever had pioneer. I have satellite, and i have a system. My system sounds damn good in my opinion and i have had great compliments from other people. I do not run my speakers off an amp ( yet) and only my subs are amped. I think you are makin a good choice to go with a pioneer. I would definatly recommend that first unit you are lookin at there. The 8600 was a sweet radio. Get it while you still can.. its goign to be discontinued soon.
