In 1946, three brothers, Medville, Logan, and Hymie Goldburg invented automobile air conditioning. They were very excited when they were granted a patent. They immediately took their air conditioned car to the Ford Corporate offices in Dearborn, Mi. Although they didn’t have an appointment, they sweet talked Henry Ford’s secretary into letting them into the office. They told Mr. Ford that they had a very special new invention, but refused to tell him exactly what it was. Instead, they insisted that he accompany them to the parking lot. He reluctantly agreed, despite the fact that it was 90+ degrees outside.
When they arrived in the parking lot they asked Henry to sit in the car & start the engine. Henry was very, very impressed. When they returned to his office, the brothers asked for $3,000,000 for the rights to their air conditioning unit. Henry offered 1 million. The brothers countered with 2 million and insisted that their name, (Goldburg) appear on the dash of every car so equipped. Well, old Henry wasn’t about to put anybody else’s name of his cars except his.
They continued to negotiate, and finally came to a settlement. The brothers accepted 2.5 million dollars, and Henry agreed to put their first names only on every air conditioned car. That agreement is still in effect today. If you look at any air conditioned car you’ll find the brother’s first names:
Lo, Hi, and Med.
