There is actually already an internal tachometer in the brains of the vehicle itself.
If you sit in the car with the ignition off, press and hold down the odometer resest stick. (Right below the MPH panel) Hold the stick down for about 5 seconds, and then (continue to hold down stick) turn on the vehicle. You should still be holding the stick down. After a couple seconds you should see the digital display blink. When that happens you can let go of the stick.
Now you can scroll through the internal diagnostics systems in the cars computer.
To move on to the next program, press and hold the stick for about one second, and it will move on to the next.
After pushing it about 15 times you will get to one that says: RPM - XXXX The "XXXX" will be numbers displaying your current RPM.
This screen will stay on until you press the stick again, or turn off your vehicle. When you restart your vehicle it will be back at the Odometer mode.
The reason I have printed all of this is because I believe since there is already an internal tach, there should be a wire leading from the computer to that little display unit that you could possible tap into somewhere along the line to install your aftermarket Tach.
I haven't done it yet, I have just learned the sounds of the engine, but most likely in the future I will buy a racing mod chip that will actually reset the "Shift Light" to "Race Mode" and will tell you when you need to shift for top performance, not economy.
Well, Marcymotorsport got one connected to the CPS but no details on how it was connected. Been working this issue on another board with no definite result/answer to the install.
I've heard that the CPS is delicate and can load down easily when another eletronic component is inserted in to the circuit.
Hmmm, that poses an interesting question since each cylinder has a dedicated coil pack. Correct me if I'm wrong but with the Zetec you tap into the coil feed somewhere with a tach adapter in order to get it to work on the Zetec. So I'm assuming somewhere on that duratec thing you've got you should be able to do something similar.
when installing remote starts we tap a tach wire to tell the car when it has started........I can find the wire you need if you want ...I just need a year of the vehicle.
Also some compaines build harnesses hat plug and play Tachs for the Focus....My automatic Focus has a Tach built in already on the side?

there is a pin for this on the 00-03 focus, I think it's pin 48 on the PCM. Whether or not this is the same for the Duratec I'm not certain. I've heard it said that this won't work for the SVT, so it may or may not work for the Duratec.
The later Focii need a tach driver to make an aftermarket tach work - the tach driver is hardwired onto the harness coming off the crankshaft position sensor.
