I know that this maybe a stupid question, but there is a program that is put out by Mr. Gasket for the laptop, can this be used to tune the duratec engine? I just got my hands on a free laptop that needs a hard drive. It had WIN95 on it. Just wondering about the program or is there one that we can buy to tune the duratec ourselves?

I've heard the Dtec's tuning is really complicated, so it's hard (if not impossible) to get right with that personal laptop software. Like how it responds to tuning protocols isn't what would be expected, or it's not consistent or something...

I personally wouldn't try to tune it myself, but I'm not sure if someone braver or with more know-how would be able.

When tunning a cars ecu there are so many varaibles that unless you had alot of time on the dyno it would be very hard to get a good tune. You best bet would be to get a chip from someone who has divoted alot of time to tunning the duratec.

Just as a reminder, even though tuning these things are a PITA - The Duratec has been out for years in the Rangers - I say hit up a truck board that has info on this.

Just my ;2cents

you wouldn't happen to know of a link where one can purchase such a program and cable? I'm just the kind of person to tune my 05 with my laptop and let you all in on it when i get some good settings.

Well to my understanding tuning the Duratec is quite simple XCal-II has three seperate tunes for the Duratec. I have the 06 ZX3 2.0 and I have not tuned her yet.

I have 65mm TB,F2 CAI,F2 4-1 race header and exhaust.....I need a tune..

So the XCAL-II sells for about 379.00 and can hook up to your laptop and has three tunes..check it out...

right it "COMES" with tunes, but if you were trying to develop your own custom tune, it's a PITA.

The complexity of the fuel maps, as well as the timing and emission controls make tinker tuning nearly impossible.  You are far better served buying a tune from someone who has hours of dyno work, as well as replacement parts available.

In regards to the Duratec in trucks vs the duratec in the focus, it's close, but not really the same, the duratec in the Rangers had 8 spark plugs instead of four, so I'm sure tuning isn't at all the same.

What more of a tune do you need other than what the X-Cal can give ?

I had asked Diablo several times for the Duratec tune but to no avail!!

They have one for th z-tec but not the Duratec....

there are advantages to custom tunes.

Not every car is exactly the same (this can be seen by people who have adjustable cam gears, as to make the most power, it is often a greatly different exhaust and ignition degree from car to car.  For some it might be +3I +4E, for another it might even be -3I, -4E, it all depends on how the car came from the factory).

Different parts require different tunes, the tunes that come with an X-cal are conservative estimation tunes of what they expect them to be used for, but a custom tune job could net more power than an off the shelf one.

The downfall is that a custom tune, requires skill, time, money and a dyno.  Without it, it's a risky adventure, and should only be attempted by experienced tuners.  Tuning your car as a novice tuner, is like sticking your finger in a light socket to see if their is electricity in it.

Who makes this X-Cal, I am from the diesel side of things, and therefore a bit lacking in knowledge, I have a 2005 ZX-5 with the 2.0, can I expect some gains from this product? Is there a website? Are there any Duratec pro's on here, I am curious what mods are the best way to go on these, I know the Zetec seems to be the one to "Boost", just want to know what is out there for mine aside from exhaust and intake kid of stuff... thanks y'all

I was looking at one for my Ranger. I have the 4.0. The guy that does the tunes for stuffforyourranger on these has a few Rangers and an SVT Focus. Check it out. It seems that individuals are making tunes for these.

http://www.stuffforyourranger.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=91&products_id=176

It is called a Rogue X Calibrator. Maybe Rouge makes it.

I would also check out a tune from Tom
http://www.focus-power.com/view.php?showme=Home
it seems he used Diablo but I have personaly met the guy and he knows his stiff and the focus as well. He was telling me that the duratec head in its stock form flows almost as well as the Ford Racing ported head for the Zetec motor. I know he likes the duratec and he might have a few things for it. Might even have a turbo setup for the duratec.
