Does anyone know what will happen if I take the "stock" intake manafold of a duratec and install it on a "PZEV" duratec? it should all match up same block and everything just wondering if it will throw a code. The stock intake manafold from the PZEV is just so damn restricted. it makes the car so sluggish, And I have a deal with one of the dealerships around here to get parts at like 10% over cost...
I'm guessing it would be fine... what code would it have to freak out over since the engines are virtually the same, one just being a slight variant of the other.
I didn't think the intake mani was one of the restrictive "PZEV" parts, though that could be wrong.
from what ive heard and read the intake manafold has a bunch of louvers and valves in it that creat turbulance in the air flow... something for better fuel economy and at highway speeds/open full throttle the valves open fully to allow smoother air flow. that right there screams restrictive to me... just my opinion. I guess it could be the same on both PZEV and nonPZEV. the intake is def a very restrictive piece, since cosworth offers an intake system which includes a CAI and a new manafold at they state that it will produce 27 more HP at the wheels. If they say the manafold needs replaceing then I think it probly does... now to just find one with out the $1100 price tag.
That's right, I had heard of those flaps and things. I thought the nonPZEVs had the same ones though? The intake is undeniably one of the big bottlenecks, no doubt.
Maybe check the 2 part numbers, for D23 and D23E, see if there are 2 separate ones, or not?
I'm pritty good with fiberglass I was thinking of makeing a new intake manafold with fiberglass or carbon fiber. would look nice painted to match and would be a nice touch for my attempt at a show car. especialy since i need all the help i can get to take attention away from that ugly lookin engine. also contemplated weather or not the stock intake manafold from my 2000 focus would fit... have it sitting here collecting dust... might be a fun test to see if it will line up correctly.

well if its not the intake manafold what ellse could be causeing all the loss in power between the 2 models? or is the ECU that detuned?
AS for an intake manifold look into the Rangers. These motors started out in the Ranger. I don't know what year they atarted but I am guessing 2002ish. I can't see the intake being much differant because thay all bolt on the same.
Its worth checking out. And you might as well check out the exhaust manifold at the same time.
The exhaust is very restrictive in the PZEV. 2 cats, a lunch box muffler, and a resonator dont make for very good HP numbers. Focus Fanatics did a CAI and cat-back install on their PZEV 2.0 (2005) and gained (if i remember right, the mag is in my car right now) 14 or so HP (it may have been more). The 2.3L did a lot better with a 23HP gain (again, IIRC...I can verify later tonight).
I wouldnt build my own intake manifold...not unless I knew exactally what I was doing and had a dyno to test things. The nicest manifold I have seen is the Costhworth, and Marcy also makes one (about $700).
The intake box on the 2.0l PZEV is junk. There is no real filter in it...not that dirt would really get up in your motor with its design, but too many turns and such in it. I would opt for making a PVC intake before just swapping to a non-PZEV intake. The only real issue you will have is deciding where to point the filter, and how to get the MAF mounted in the PVC pipe (i would cut a hole and just use some epoxy or some kind of caulking). I've looked into this already.

Thats actualy what I did but I didn't use PVC I used Polished Aluminum
tubeing from my Zetec CAI works well lil more peppy and alot better
sounding. I was refering to replaceing the intake manafold itself with
a stock one from a non PZEV. Exhaust is another subject all
together.
I didn't realize the PZEV came w/ the 2.0 Duratec?
Call me crazy but I have the 2.3 and at this moment I'm not doing anything because I have a monster of a warranty left and I'm THRILLED with the increse in HP and response and fuel mileage over my ZETEC.
I posted a huge article about the PZEV and the Duratecs in this Duratec Performance area.

I am blessed with a standard warranty and the choice to get some actual
power out of the engine. the 2.3 PZEV might be okay but the 2.3 would
be great. just like the 2.0 PZEV is sufficient but the 2.0 would
be good. If I use mostly all "Ford" parts they cant give me to
much trouble in warranty issues. you cant void a warranty the
company has to be able to prove what you or I did caused the
issue. my 2.0 PZEV has less power then my zetec did. I'm
only doing mods enough to be able to keep up with the other Foci around
here, no need to be raceing any honda that comes along.

Yes, the 2.0 is the PZEV for 2005. Green states get the PZEV 2.0 with a small performance hit, non-green states get a regualr 2.0
