I'm pretty sure any FI would require internals for the Duratec... I
know it's powdered metal rods explode at anything above 7 psi turbo'd,
so you'd need at least stronger rods and pistons. Correct me if I'm
wrong, but that's considered "internals" right?

I don't really know much about SC vs. turbo... I believe turbo has low-end lag, ad I don't thikn SC does? That's about it.

well youd have to upgrade or retune the ECU as well as youd want to upgradeyour injectors and fuel pmup.  more air youd want more fuel right?  new intake manifold casue plasticisnt the best under pressure. i beleive.

a supercharger is probably alot less work...

Bolt it on usually in the place of the standard intake manifold, or
right on top of it.  A small bit of plumbing and wiring depending
on the kit you go with and then tuning.  You can adjust PSI within
reason by adjusting the pulley size.  Uses crank revolutions to
drive the pulley which turns compressor which creates boost, which
gives power.  More or less, usually you won't see as big of
numbers for power with superchargers, at least the ones for the Focus,
you can get good numbers, but if you want say 300bhp or so or more,
you'd need something else.  I'm pretty sure none of the
supercharger kits are capable of that type of number.

a turbocharger requires a good amount of work, because there is all the
installation of the turbo piping which is both an intake and an exhaust
project.  Typically requires a good amount of customizing, or at
least finagling.  Typically more difficult to tune, but it can be
done, and there is the usual piping to be included, such as oil lines
and what not.  You can usually make more power because you can
crank up the boost, but the amount of boost is limited by the turbo
type, size and trim.  Most of the turbo's used on the focus, don't
have a tremendous amount of lag, since most are using smaller, faster
spooling turbines.  Usually requires that you eliminate your
catalytic convertor which immediately makes you illegal on the
road.

Depending on the power level you are looking for and the amount of
money you are looking to spend, both methods have their
advantages.  Each one has pros and cons, and really comes down to
your preferences.  You'll hear alot of supercharger people say
there isn't anything better, turbo's have lag blah blah blah, and the
turbo guys will tell you there is no such thing as lag and you can make
all the power in the world, granted you can't legally drive your car
without the cat, and there seems to be a much more difficult time
tuning turbo's purely by the nature of the forced induction
system.  If you start making alot of power, you'll need to boost
up internals, though I'm not sure where the belief that the duratec is
weaker comes in...from all the things I've read it should be stronger
in many ways than the silly zetec.  Unless of course, the 2.0 and
the 2.3 are more different than just displacement.

Turbo's give more power and SC are more reliable...

Does that answer your question...:D

As for the intake manifold I think people are using the stock one on there turboed and SC cars but I could be mistaken.

I do know that a decent turbo setup will run you just about as much a decent SC setup.

Talk to t3-rex. He just gat a turbo installed less than a year ago.

You can use the stock intake manifold with a FI set-up.
As far as the debate, I'm bias.  I love my turbo, it delivers
great power, the sound of it spooling up in intoxicating and I can make
more boost if I want to.  I know the stock zetec internals can
handle up to about 10psi, assuming you have a good tune and a decent
set-up.
With the SC you will not make as much torque as a turbo, IMO torque is
where the fun is.  The PowerWorks SC seems like the best
one.  The packageing of it seems very efficent, and it replace
your stock intake manifold.  The power numbers are also very
impressive.

turbo will outperform a supercharger any day of the week. pound for pound you get more with turbo. Turbos do not have the amount of parasitic drag that superchargers do. now, lets discuss why anyone would get a supercharger. SC's make boost almost immediately. they are belt driven so it dosent require any amount of exhaust pressure to spool up. The drawbacks of this is that with a large supercharger, you wont see full boost untill almost redline. with a smaller supercharger you'll see full boost earlier but it will huff out with a smaller max pressure. Turbos take some time to spool and the charge air is hotter because unlike the SC, the turbo has the heat of compression AND the heat of the compressor wheel from the exhaust gasses turning it. This of course can be combated with an intercooler. Aftercooling a supercharger is harder depending on the type of SC (roots, twinscrew, centrifugal).

My personal choice is Turbo. The BEST setup is supercharger AND turbo, with a bypass valve to switch from SC to turbo when the turbo has spooled and pressure is exceeding that of the SC.

AJ, I checked the Marcy site quickly, I dunno if it's listed on the
site as a product to like "Put in Cart", but I'm sure if you called
Walter he'd be able to throw the pieces together for a price... he
seems like that kinda person, from what I've heard.

It's a beastly NA engine though, damn.

If your talking about the 2.3 that was in the last issue of Focus
Fanatic you are going to spend much more for the parts than for a good
FI set-up.

Cosworth parts- 1-3 $5,285
flywheel- $439
Clutch- $489
Exhaust- $695 ( seems like alot)
oil sump mod- $200
oil cooler- $399

bah, I'd want something other than a turbo, just because everyone with
a turbine and a welder seem to have one nowadays.  I've never been
into the "cool" thing.  I'd want all motor and have it be
nasty.  Or have the powerworks supercharger just because not many
others will.  Turbo's are too mainstream for me. :) Every kid with
car keys and a copy of Fast and the Furious want's a turbo now.

If your going to look at it that way Joe, tunning sport compact cars is
to mainstream.  Every kid with a car and a copy of Fast and
Furious wants to mod their car.;)
If they were talking about which massive body kit of over the top wing
I would say that is mainstream.  I know a few people who own
performance shops and the people who keep them in the green are the
people getting body kits for their 89' civic's.  People who are
serious about performance mods aren't mainstream, unfortunately.

V-8...

Otherwise...all things considered...the Powerworks Supercharger seems to be the best overall...easy installation, good power, reliability...

Either the Power Works SC or wait for the Duratec turbo kit from
Focus-Power.  They will be about the same cost and produce similar
power numbers.

Also I was just kidding about the Saturn.

Nitrous, bitches.

Here's why:
Fuel economy stays, unline true FI. It's only there when you need it to
be. No constant extra wear on your engine. The Zetec can handle up to a
75 shot bone stock with no issues. Probably more but that's the most
they reccomend. It's cheaper to build a nitrous system than to build a
FI system. You can get a nitrous kit for <$500 if you look around.
Hell I got mine for basically free.

Now don't get me wrong, if I had the $$$ I'd boost it and juice it. Maybe one day. But for now I'll suck the bottle.

As for my weapon of chioce, I'd go turbo. Sure, there's more involved-
but a turbo has one advantage that I'm surprised noone else mentioned.
Since a turbo is hard to spool up when not under load- you will get the
power AFTER you launch, resulting in better 1/4 mile times because of
less wheelspin.

And, if your running autotragic, you get even more advantage- you'll get to spool some before you launch by brake-torquing!
