my throttle cable is kinda sticky right at the begining.  it's like when i first step on the gas i have to push past a little sticky part and then it's smooth.

not that big a deal unless i'm in slow stop and go trafic, i don't even notice it.  but it's getting worse.  for a while now.

is there some way to clean it?  is it hard to replace?

Get "safe for coated throttle bodies" cleaner and remove and spray the inside of the TB. You had a 65mm at once so I know you know how to take it off :D

Chelly had Ford clean the TB in her 02 but after about a month the stickyness came back and ford replaced it under warranty. If your still under warranty take it in and they will do the cleaning than replace unless you have a good dealer and pissing and moaning will get you a new TB :D:D

I think a new TB will run you the same or more than a aftermarket 65mm one.

As fx3 mentioned get that sucker cleaned, the TB that is.  That would be the first and easiest thing to do.

If that fails and the 'stickiness' persists, it could be the TPS has a bad spot in it and may need to be replaced.  That said, however, if that were the issue it would probably be extremely evident in that it wouldnt run or idle properly, etc.

I had the sticky issue on my Focus and it turned out to actually be the cable.  I ended up taking some Amsoil MP and spraying in the cable (there is a wire cable inside the black protective sheath) and after doing that I never had any further issues with it.  I dont know what caused it to stick initially but once I sprayed it with the MP it was good to go from then on.

hmm.. that's interesting.  yea i've been thinking it's the cable cause i've had my trottle apart a couple times and it never felt sticky in my hand, you know?

i didn't know if there was a way to clean the cable but you say just spraying some up in there?  did you spray it on both ends?

No, just on the end that connects to the TB.  The spray action will force it up in there quite a ways and then the action of the cable moving back and forth will work it in a little more, not all the way but it will get around in there.

I sprayed it a couple times after that over the course of a week or so and then just let it be.

yea, yesterday i played arround with it with my hand (without taking anything off)  and as much as i thought it was the cable it sure feels like a gunky TB one i start moving it arround with my fingers.

so i'll be picking up some throttle body cleaner sometime over the next few days.

just for kicks; in this aplication, is that amsoil MP substitutable for something easy to find like wd40?  or would i need to find one of you lovely amsoil dealers to get me some... if i were to be spraying stuff up into that cable...

update:  i got some trottle body cleaner and whiped all the gunk out of that baby.  (and there was quite a lot)  now she's all clean.  took her for a spin and all seems well.

still curious about substitutin wd40 or something for that amsoil MP cause i might want to spray something up in there to keep it all smooth for the future.

The Amsoil MP is kinda like WD40, but obviously I think it is better.  That said, it is something you would have to pick up from an Amsoil dealer, which myself and Chelly are.

Amsoil MP is a synthetic spray lubricant, whereas WD40 is not.  As well, MP is designed to be persistent, that is to say it leaves a lubricating film behind to continue to lubricate the surfaces.  I know it is extremely popular among gun owners and is used in some cases to protect electrical wiring from environmental damage.

Amsoil also makes MPHD which is a heavy duty version.  This is even more persistent, but Im not sure it can be used on something like TB cables.  I 'think' I remember seeing/reading something that indicated that it could not, but I dont recall what it was right now.

I sprayed my automatic garage door track and bearings with MPHD almost two years ago and that stuff is still on there and everything moves freely.  Its also used by motorcycle owners to spray the chain.  I sponsor a local drag bike racer that uses it for this purpose.

I have some of the MP and ironically my tb seems to be getting sticky...lucky me!

I'll let you know what I find (if it's safe or not) if I use it I'll report!

The MP is safe to use, its the HDMP that I think has the warning to not use on TB's and such, but Im 100% certain the regular MP is okay to use.

Yeah, its a little scary.  Mine happened coming to a stop light with heavy traffic.  I was some kinda heavy on the brakes let me tell ya.

Im not 100% convinced that the stick TB cables I have heard about with the Focus arent a result of its design, specifically how its routed, directly over the engine.  I have always wondered if the heat of the engine was melting the housing some and that in turn making the cable sticky.  I never saw anything externally on the cable that indicated a heat issue, but I dont know if ther may be an interior sheath that may be getting damaged by the heat.

The Focus was the only car I have ever owned that had an issue with a sticky TB cable and it is, coincidently, the only one I can recall where the cable was routed directly over the engine, which in the case of the Focus takes it directly over the headers.

The toyota trucks have the throttle cable going over the rear of the motor but it's an inch or so above the valve cover and only has the couple inches of the SOCH valve cover (the skinny way) to cross. The cable comes out of the fire wall right near the exhaust manifold and shoots straight up.

well i still haven't done a thing to my cable.  just washed the TB with cleaner i picked up at my local store and it seems to have worked.

i think the amsoil MP might be a good thing to have for a just in case thing.

i'll probly have you (fx3) put a can on my next order.  i'm about nine or ten thousand miles away from needing new oil.  i think...  oh i'll check sometime.
