Now my brake light on the dash is on. It's the one that stays on if you forget the handbrake is on. It's actually not on all the time. Sometimes it's on steadily, sometimes off, & sometimes it flickers.

I like this car, but to be honest, it's starting to piss me off. It's coming up on 3 years old, has 34.000 miles, and if you held it at eye level, the list of things that have gone wrong would hang down to your ankles. I've been patient, but there IS a limit.

So now I've got the gas cap light on, plus the brake light. It's very colorful.;tim

PITA isn't it. Mine went on for no apparent reason last fall. I just pulled leads and snapped them back on again and all was ok. Seems that the connectors in this car just seem to be begging for a reason to break contact

It's a light in the cluster that says "check gas cap" or something to that effect. My car (y2k model) doesn't have this light, I think it is covered by the CEL light on the y2k's. My wifes car, on the other hand, has this light. Her's is a 2k2 model. I've never seen this light come on in the normal course of driving, but I've seen it on startup when the lights are supposed to go on.:driv

check the fluid level. hits a certain point and will flicker, or if on a hill will stay on steady.
check for leaks in the brake system, or if you have a clutch look for fluid on the carpet, clutch master may have gone south.
just went through this a couple months back on the svt. crap eats the rubber off the pedal when the master goes... not to mention the carpet mess...

I took the gas cap off & replaced it several times, and the car has been through a couple of dozen start cycles. I filled up with gas today. The $%% is still on. Thanks for the advice on the brake light. I haven't done any of the suggestions, but I'll take a look at it tomorrow.

BTW, the gas cap light is yellow. It's located in the upper left of the instrument binnacle.

Dang, dude. You better find out if there's a leak somewhere. It rely's on a pressure sensor of some sort. Did they replace your pump on the recall? They mighta messed up somewhere.

the brake light one, is probably due to low fluid level, mine was doing that, it would flicker, it would go out, it would come on...it was the fluid level. One thing to check when you refill it, look down under the dash right behind the clutch, if you are leaking fluid there you need a new clutch master cylinder (and since you just had your clutch replaced, you might be able to convince them that they caused the problem). As for the gas cap light...It doesn't really detect that the gas cap is there, it takes a basic reading on the pressure of the fuel system as a whole. Mine came on once and they found some valve was stuck open but in order to find it they had to smoke the engine. I'll see if I can find that invoice with the specifics on it, but it was some sort of valve.

Wow Mr. V - I'm sad my car is dead - mine's the exact same car as yours I do believe.

I had very few problems at all with my 2k2 Power Premium.  Never anything other than rotors replaced due to warping on the brakes.

Hope the fluid helps!

Fluid's OK. I'm taking it to the dealer Friday. It's still under warantee.

Yeah Chelly, I think they're twins. Yellow power premium, 5 spd. power sun roof.

You were spot on. Although the fluid level was all right, the clutch master cylinder is leaking. They had to order a part. It'll be in early next week.

The gas cap light was from a vacuum hose that came off a fitting.
