Yeah... FoMoCo could stand re-engineering their IMRC units used on (what I've heard to be) several different car models... Though Im not sure about the 4 cyls... definately on all the 2.5L V6s... Those of you aren't sure of what the problem is, let me explain- IMRC stands for Interior Manifold Runner Control- it yanks open valves at x RPM- improving performance and fuel economy in many cases. ie: My contour SVT is 2v/cyl below 3750RPM and 4v/cyl above 3750RPM, making the most pronounced horsepower and torque curve change I've ever felt in a ford. The problem arises because they stuck this partly electronic unit underneath a piece of black plastic that says 2.5L Duratec (I think Duratec I think) on it, trapping all the engine heat below it and frying the unit. You can strip off this piece of asthetic plastic- but even then... engine heat tends to fray the cable at around 75k miles... and even then- they use a plastic gear in the IMRC unit itself which tends to crap out... this is triple-redundant obsolecence engineering if you ask me.... I've replaced mine already- and let me tell you... it was a damned hassle
my problem with the IMRC is that its timed wrong on the SPI. also needs to open a bit slower instead of just kicking down. I had to come up with some electronics black magic to make that happen on mine.
