I went to start up my car only to have my key get jammed and not be able to turn the car on. I had to take a set of pliers to it just to get the key out but it still won't turn the car on. I've read a little about this happening to other people with 2000 foci. What do I need to do to fix this? Do I have to have it taken care of by ford or a lock smith or something? I really need help on this one as soon as possible so if someone could please help me out here I'd really appreciate it.

Ok after checking around on a few sites I found out that it is possible to replace the broken cylinder myself. Has anyone done this before? I don't want to bother with trying it if it's something I won't be able to finish, so if anyone knows what steps need to be taken I could really use the help.

I've heard some about this problem before, although it's never happened to me. If you replkaced the cylinder yourself, I wonder if your key would still work. The built-in computer chip would have to match. I don't know if that's a function of the cylinder, the computer, or what. If the new cylinder comes with a key, would you have to get the key programmed to your car? If so, I've heard that's pretty expensive.

That's probably at the top of my list of questions. I found a good how-to for replacing the locking cylinder but does anyone know if my key will still work or am I going to have to go to Ford anyway so they can program a new set?

For anyone looking for a how-to on this here is the best one I found
http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=54527

This person did it without having to have a new set of keys reprogrammed but I'm a little unsure on that part.  Other than that It looks simple enough (everything but the drilling which seems like it'll be a pain in the ass) I'm sure I can do it myself.

If you have both of your keys, you can re-program the car yourself.  It's very easy really.  I believe your manual should refer to this, if not I know it's kicking around somewhere.  Too bad MMF died like it did - that info was in there.

My car had the same problem. I brought it in and had Ford replace it.

The how-to does make it sound easy, but there is a good chance that you could crack the steering column. Even at the dealer thats what happened to mine. before they even started they said it was a common side effect of drilling everything out so I should be prepared for the cost.

So... if you want to try it, i say go for it, but just remember, the little car might end up being fixed by Ford in the end anyways!

I'm not to worried about the drilling. From what people have posted online this can be an expensive fix and I really can't afford to have ford do it. In the end if I have to take it to them anyway then at least I can say I tried.

I wish I had 2 keys but I don't. So if it needs reprogramming it'll be a visit to ford.

For the reprogramming don't get taken on it.  I've only had to pay $35 to have reprogramming done.  If they want to charge you more than $50 I'd say go to another dealer - heck, calll arond and see what they charge first.

Really $35? For a brand new set of keys or just to replace one? About a year ago when I was trying to get a new set made they said it would be about $75. If I can get it for less than $50 I'll have it done right away. I always worry about only having one key to start the car.

You can buy the transponder keys on ebay pretty cheap, and as Chelly said if you have two other keys that are already programmed you can program more.

My tumbler went out several years ago and I had to have it towed and fixed by Ford....luckily it was still under warranty at the time.

I remember the DIY getting brought up on MFF before it went down so I don' t know if the information is out there anywhere, but from what I remember it's not an extremely difficult task, but it does require some mechanical ability.

To replace keys through Ford you're going to have to pay a pretty penny.

The $35-$50 was just to reprogram if you had the key(s).

Go onto E-BAY for the Pats keys...you can get them VERY cheap - even in colors!

When I got the car I only got one key so I can't do it myself but I did talk to Ford today and they said it would be in total about $55 for a new set of keys. I'll check out ebay right now to see what kind of price I can get on a set of cooler (cheaper) keys.

As for the locking cylinder I went ahead and had Ford fix it. It turns out the part was something like $105 and with labor it came to a total of $199 and it took the guy all day long so I'm kinda glad I left it alone now. He said he's never had that much trouble getting a lock out before but my car was a big pain. So it's fixed now until the next thing randomly breaks.

Well there is no "reprogramming" all they do is detach the PATS from the cylinder take the little chip outta the key and put it in the new one...I took them outta my keys in order to to do the remote start.  on the top of th ekey theres a littel rubber square that pulls straight up and your:driv little chip doodle is in there.

I just helped MurphysLaw change out Poke's 2nd ignition and it was easy. You pay about $80 for a new ignition cylinder. Get ford to take your vin and give you the ignition numbers. Built the new egnition cylinder (took MurphysLaw and I about 2 minutes but ford says it takes 20 minutes) than we spent between 20-30 minutes removing and installing the new cylinder(it was danm cold out so we were well motivated). We did not have to drill out the ignition and the car worked fine with the original key. The PATS system is bolted near the ignition cylinder and not actually part of the cylinder.

it wasnt as bad as its being made out to be.  i just removed the old one, rebuilt the new one and swapped it out. no drilling and about 30 minutes to replace it all.

took longer to destroy the old one to see why it didnt work.
