If someone could explain to me what the code P0705 means in layman's terms i would appreciate it very much. I just need to know how big of a deal this is and what i need to do to remedy it. thanks in advance

It means the computer didnt like what it saw from the range sensor, better known as the neutral safety switch.

We could probably better isolate the issue if you let us know what if any things you are observing with the car.  If you have the code, I assume the either the CEL is on or the transmission light is on on the dash.

If so, are there any erratic shifts, hard to shift, slow shifts or anything in general going on with the transmission?

It could be the neutral safety switch itself, it could be a bind in the shift cable that isnt moving the switch lever correctly, and so on.  Neutral safety switches arent typically hard to replace but I dont remember on the Focus now.  They are usually on top of the tranny somewhere and to find it all you have to do is trace out the shift cable.  But it should be the only sensor on the tranny with a lever that has a cable hooked up to it and I would imagine it is on the drivers side of things.

There is a TSB for it:

TSB #18477 -- HARSH TRANSMISSION ENGAGEMENT AND OR DTC P0705. *EH (NHTSA ID #10014667, MARCH 01 2005)

TSB #18321 -- HARSH TRANSMISSION ENGAGEMENT AND OR DTC P0705. *EH (NHTSA ID #10014596, DECEMBER 01 2004)

I dont know what models that applies to, but it could be worth looking into.  If you dont have any warranty left, then I would personally start with the neutral safety switch.  Its not common they go bad, but I have had one car that did have one go bad and it wouldnt let the car start because the computer didnt see the transmission as being in park or neutral.

Hope this helps.

the only erratic shifts that i notice is that sometimes when i let off the gas, the rpms remain high, but soon drop down. not sure if this may cause it but i am hoping to get a trans flush and fill soon. while im talking about that, how much does a flush and fill cost on average?? and should i get it done at a mechanic or the dealership??

The high rpm thing is a Focus quirk.  I know it seemed to be more prevelant in the MTX focus than the ones with the automatic tranny's though.

If I remember correctly the focus automatic transmission only holds 7qts total, pan drop was like 3.5 - 4.0 quarts.  Unless you know the mechanic really really well, Id go to the dealership for this.  The reason being is that I would want to be absolutely sure they did a pan drop and filter change as a part of the flush.

There's no point in doing a transmission flush and not dropping the pan and changing out the filter.  But the fact that Ford uses sealant on the tranny pan rather than a gasket makes for longer job cleaning off all the sealant.
