a car with 4 wheels, a seat belt, and 25 bucks or so for the entry fee. Other than that, I don't think anything else is "required" though there are many things I would recommend, like water, air pressure gauge, sun block among a few of them.

You should come down to one of the g2g/cruises we have on Sundays...there is one this Sunday, April 15...pm me if you're interested.

see above for what you need to enter, as for the classing, it is done by SCCA classes, so there isn't "open" classing, if this is your first time autocrossing, then I would recommend when you go through tech inspection that you ask for assistance in classing your vehicle. Or you can indicate what you have done here and I can try and guide you to the right class beforehand.
for newcomers I would suggest being there at or before 8:30AM, as that is when registration starts, registration closes at 9:30AM if you show up after that you may not be allowed to run, it is up to the event chair, if you are allowed you will be assesed an extra $5 late fee on top of your registration.
Tech will happen sometime around then. Tech's primary job however is NOT to class you, it is simply to ensure that your car is safe for autocrossing.
They will check to make sure your battery and airbox are secure, that your car is clear of any items that are not bolted down, if you have audio equipment in the car that is not bolted down it has to come out, the car should be clean, and you must remove the drivers side floor mat. They most likely will check to see if your tires are in fair condition (no threads or belts showing), and they will probably check to see if your ball joints are alright. Classing is more on the honor basis, but if someone thinks you have misclassed yourself they could protest you. It's usually better to have an idea of what class you are in before you get there.
HJC makes a good helmet for cheap. i bought mine 3 years ago to start auto xing with, for $120...since it has been repainted 3 times and is used as abike helmet since i no longer auto x
