So my rooommate took this class last semester, and one of the questions they considered was "what can be considered art?" Well it just made me think of that when I ran across this here Yahoo!News story!

Ok, if a damn primate can go ahead and fetch 5 figures for some paint on canvas, I am in the wrong field! I am admittedly a terrible artist, my stick figures are terrible, but I could do something similar to the painting shown in the article! Of course it would lack the novelty... Painting by Chimp vs. Painting by Untalented Human I guess one is more collectible, go figure!

But yikes, Chimps having artistic talent, opinion anyone? I'm not sure I buy it, I don't think the Chimp was thinking of some interpretation of his masterpiece as he played with his paints, I don't know that he could really be considered "artistic"?

I can't help wondering what price it would have fetched if the "painter" had been unknown.

There was story a few years back about the elephants that worked in the teak forests in India. Since they banned the cutting of teak the elephants and people no longer had a job so alot of the elephants went to a sanctuary. So to raise money for the sanctuary they taught the elephants how to paint. Really they taught them to hold the brush and dip it into the color and put it on the canvas. but the elephants pick the color and put the paint on the canvas any way they choose. It was neat seeing them work. but the sanctuary sells the paintings and people in the US will pay in the tens of thousands of dollars range to buy these paintings. Plus its for a good cause. If some rich butthead wants to pay that much money for a painting done by an animal then I have no problem with it.

I tried to teach my dog how to paint but she kept eating the brushes and knocking over the paints so really the painting incolved some splash marks and a bunch of paw prints. not much to look at but it still went on the fridge. Bleach to clean the paint off the patio...$10 (there was alot of paint). Bath and grooming to get paint off of dog, $30. A Beanie Weanies original for everyone to see, Priceless

Yeah I know, I'm nuts.

Haha, I agree that it serves the rich person right for paying that much. And the elephant story seems nice, since it was going towards their sanctuary, I don't know what the money from Congo's art went to.

And a big AWWWW for trying to teach your dog to paint! Mine would probably be good enough at stepping in paint and walking all over the place, but that's about it. I'd put it up on my fridge anyway! BTW, is that your pup as your avatar, because that dog's adorable!

Yup that's the Beanie Weanies. Her proper name was Killian but I only called her that when she was in trouble...which was just about every five minutes. But she did her job and made me laugh and was a great snot rag when I was crying.

The sad thing was it took me five quite expensive paint brushes to figure out that she was gonna keep chewing them. So I had her grab the laundry instead. She was very helpful with socks. I have a bigger print of that picture up on the wall with all the pictures of the family members. Right in the middle. She has the fanciest frame and the biggest picture. That pic really captured her personality. I very happy witht he way it turned out.

It is a great picture. What type of dog is she, or a Heinz 57 special?
