God I want to go to bed. Stupid co worker got into a car accident (he's fine, just his truck got totaled)  and now I have to cover for him while he's taking care of crap. I should be sleeping right now. THis is my time to sleep, not work. This sucks. I'm a night worker, not a day worker. just give me a pillow. Some one help make me stay awake. The coffee ain't workin'.

Newsflash:)
If you find something that you basically enjoy, life is a heck of a lot more fun. Every job has days that suck but as long as there are more good ones than bad ones it all works out. :)

Not true. I have a friend who used to love working on cars, so he became a mechanic. Now he hates working on cars. He won't even work on his own toys anymore. So just because you enjoy it doesn't mean you should do it for a job.

I've found that happiness is being your own boss. I'm hoping that withing the next 10 years from now, I'll have my electrical contracting license- and I'll be my own boss. I'll be the guy paying Joe Schmuck $6/hr to do the hard work, and I'll be making the big $$ in the process. That is why I went back to school. I hate working when I'm TOLD to, not when I WANT to.

For right now, I'm gonna be a ground monkey, gaining experience and working my way up so I can eventually get my contractor's license. I have an interview with a contracting firm next week, and I recently finished my first year AGC electrician class.

It's all about being your own boss (and the boss of others). Working when you want, doing what you want, for who you want. Don't want to do a particular job? Don't! Want to hire someone else to do the hard work? Go ahead!

I certainly wish you well. As someone who has owned a business for 15+ years, I can tell you, it isn't as easy as you make it out to be. When you're the boss/owner, everyone who walks in the door is your boss. The buck stops with you. You are ultimately responsible for EVERYTHING that happens re: the business.  You have to pay all the bills, including payroll, 50% of all your employees FICA, both halves of your FICA, pay their vacation time, pension, health benefits, self employment tax, workers comp, insurance, rent, utilities, keep scrupulous records, balance the books, etc. IF you have any money left, after your employees and the bills get paid, it's yours. Oh, BTW, you absolutely cannot be late with any of those payments. EVER.

As far as working when you want...LOL! If somebody comes in the door waving money and says they want this job done by X/XX/XX, guess what you're gonna do? Sure you can refuse, but unless you're fantastically successful, well... Don't forget that you'll have lots & lots of competition. If you don't take the job, one of your competitors will. Then the next time that customer wants something done, they won't likely be asking you to do it. When you drive by a business and notice the lights are on at a very late hour...guess who's working? I'll give you a hint. It's not an employee. See someone sweeping or cleaning the windows. A dollar to a donut says it's the boss.

After a while, you may find yourself on a fishing vacation trip, camping in the Canadian wilderness, totally relaxing and enjoying life to the fullest. (BTW, as the business owner you get no paid vacations, no sick days, no paid holidays). And as you're casting your line, suddenly a thought occurs to you..."I wonder how that job for the ABC Company is going? I thought there might be some problems with that. Maybe I'll call in to see how things are going?" Bottom line is, when you're the owner, you're always working.

You're going to pay some poor schmuck to do all the dirty work, while you sit back and collect the money? ROTFLMAO. Let's say your new business is doing pretty well, and you have 5-7 employees, mostly doing grunt work. One day you do something that pisses some of them off, (you may never know what you did or said), and 2 or 3 of them just don't show up for work one day and never come back. You & your business depend on these people doing what they do. Speaking for myself, managing myself takes just about everything I have. Managing OTHER people is lots harder, especially if you don't have lots of experience at it.

When I owned my two photography studios, I had 5 full-time employees not including myself. It was a huge amount of fun, and I have no regrets about having done it. It was a great adventure and learning experience, and I was successful. But I tired of it after a while. I sold the business and decided to return to teaching. I took a temporary, full-time job working on an assembly line at a Ford plant, while I was updating my teaching certificate. Personally, I can't begin to tell you what a relief it was to go to work, knowing that I was going to have regular hours, was only responsible for exactly what I did, and the biggest decision I'd have to make that day was what to pack for lunch.

So, I'm back teaching now. It's a very hard, complicated, emotional job. But I have good benefits, (paid for by someone else BTW), regular hours, and good working conditions. Maybe it's just my age, but I'm at the point now that I firmly believe that simpler is better. What I want is for someone to hand me a bucket and a mop, then get the hell out of here, leave me alone, and let me do my job.

I odn't mind the whole working thing. I like to work. Even if I won the lottery I would still work. I like the fact that I can go buy a CD whenever I want without having to worry about whether I'm gonna have enough money for gas for the rest of the week. I still budget money but its nice not to have to worry about it as much. I just don't like the morning shifts. I would rather work in the afternoons and the nights and the REALLY early mornings (12am to 6am). It tends to be quieter and I am more awake and more functional and can concentrate more.

I do want to start my business because ultimately I want to work out of the house. If I want to make a bed for a customer in Timbuktu while in my pajames I can do it. I'm not quitting the jobs I have now, until I am sure that is going to take off, and probably will not be able to hire anyone until it takes off. So until that happens I'm reading and going to take business and marketing classes (with my sister, she wants to start her own business too) and go from there. I have no problem sitting at the machine for 12 hours a day or the computer. I am so anal I would want to take care of everything myself so i know it gets done exactly the way I want it done. I'm also not a very nice boss (I tend not to put up with anyones crap and get annoyed very easily) so I would need to take some management classes too to be a nicer boss. but that's just me. I have worked with a bunch of idiots and slackers and I don't handle it well. That's just me.

But it would still be nice to take a vacation every once in a while. I would still worry about what's going on at work and what;s getting done and what's getting messed up and disorganized but that's just me. I think that's my dad's fault. he made me like this. Freakin' worka holic.

Mr. V, I completely understand what you're saying about running a business. There is a lot of worrying involved lol. There is always that worry about steady income, or losing employees, or losing customers, liability (getting sued), and etc and etc and etc!

However I am sick of making other people rich. I'm tired of getting cut a check- I want to be the one cutting them. I've worked for four different companies owned by 5 different people (one of them died while I was working for them so we got a new owner) and under 5 different money making philosophies.

I've learned a lot about how a business is run, large or small. I've learned a lot of ideas about how to make a business work for you, how to make money work for you. I know that running a business is by no means easy- however it is much more gratifying in my opinion, than slaving away for minimum wages doing boring, laborious work.

One of the things I've learned is that you have to refuse work (from the late Larry Quadracci, previous owner of Quad/Graphics, inc.). If there is something that is not going to work well for you, refuse it. Now I realize if you're only getting a small amount of work, you can't refuse anything. But when your business is steady, and you're making a sufficient fund, it is OK to refuse a job you don't feel would be good for you or your company to take.

I've also learned all about cheap labor. There's tons of it out there. For every job there's at least 2 people willing to take it- and if you're hiring for a skill-less job, you can hire just about any schmuck at a dollar more than minimum wage and keep him for a couple months, maybe years. If you feel they would be a good permanent addition to your company, promote them, pay them more, put them in charge of the other schmucks, make them feel valued. But if they're not, keep paying them low wages and they'll eventually go away, opening the door to more possible promotees.

Yes, there are benefits to working for someone else- a steady check, vacation time, health insurance... but you also have to realize that THEY are the ones controlling it! You can lose all those great benefits... sometimes for no reason at all (ever heard of "downsizing"?) But as far as I've been able to tell, an owner has never been downsized out (bought out, maybe).

Like I said, I'm tired of making the rich richer. It's time for me to start moving forward with my life and stop wasting my time working to make another person's Lexus payment while I can't afford to buy gas. I want to get somewhere with my life. I don't want to be looking back at my life when I'm 60 (and still working full-time) wondering "WTF was I thinking?". This is why I went back to school. Not to be a grunt. I've done that for the past 8 years- and probably will for another 8 before I can get a start on my own. But the time for me to start taking those steps forward is now.

yeah i have tried those. No effect. I have also tried red bull and all the other crap and still does nothing. I have to work tonight for 8 hours then the other hospital for 6 hours then come back to this hospital and cover for the coworker again tomorrow morning. So once again no sleep. He's supposed to be back by 1 but I have a feeling that its gonna be later. But that's cool. I won't have to work tomorrow night until 11 and then have a short shift at both hospitals on Saturday.
