I have a 2000 ford focus, and above the hazard light button there is a blinking red light that is one even when the car is off. What is this light for, and does it drain the battery?

The is a series of lights on the left side of the dashboard that form a crescent shape. The lower left light is orange, and it is on. What is that light for?

I brought the car used and I dont have an owner's manual.

First off welcome.

The light over the 4-way flasher switch is the passave alarm system activation light. It should only blink when the car is off. It is a LED and will not drain your battery.
Your key has a computer chip in it and the car will not start unless is sees the correct cut key and the correct computer chiped key

As for the orange light. I haven't looked at my car in a few months.
The orange light is a warning light. Either check engine or gas cap or similar.

IIRC the lower left light is the check engine or check gas cap light.

I guess that explains why the key I had made did not work. Is there a way for me to get a copy of the key other than going through Ford?

That depends, how many working keys do you have?

If you have 2, you can program a key yourself, you'll need a cut key blank (one with the transponder chip in it). http://www.fordf150.net/howto/patskey.php
