SPI (SWAB) How-To
Alright, here's the how to with pics. what you are doing is locking your secondary intake valves open. Under normal conditions, your secondary valves would open after 3500 RPM. but the valves open slowly and if you have an automatic, you'll be shifting right when the valves open. Doing this mod will not really add hp per se, but it will help you reach higher hps in a shorter amt of time. It makes for a nice launch. ok, here it is.
Step one; Locate the IMRC actuator.
The thing in blue is my actuator hanging off the fuse box. the red arrow is where it will be located on your car.
Step 2; Removal. Take out your battery and remove your air intake. After that out of the way, you will notice there are 2 bolts holding it on. One on the top right and one on the bottom left. These can be removed with an 8mm socket. the top one is easy, the bottom one you will need a good size extension. The EGR tube is blocking the way. The easiest way is to sort of nestle the head of the ratchet in the battery tray.
Step3; Setting the armature. The valves are in the closed position when the car is off, so when you take off your IMRC, that's how its set to open them, turn the armature counterclockwise until it stops. Use a piece of wire to hold the armature open. You can also use a small spring or whatever you can come up with, I used wire.
That pic is of the armature in the open position.
Step four: Reinstallation. You can hang your IMRC off the fuse box if you want to, but what I did today was to use a spacer on the bolts to allow the IMRC to be attatched, without turning the valves. get a nut or some washers and place them between IMRC and the intake manifold. Then tighten the bolts and your done. Reinstall your intake and battery and go for a test drive.
The red arrow is the spacer, the blue arrow is the wire holding the valves
open.
